PrintHere it is, the final days before Christmas. Is your shopping done yet? Have you been stumped what to get that person or persons on your list? Don’t know what to get for that person that has everything? Well, I’ve got a recommendation that will cost you very little but could not only save lives, but make them better.

I was approached this week by my friends at BuzzPlant to spread the word about an organization called “Filter of Hope.” When I watched the video below, I could not get over the staggering statistics:

  • 4000 children will die today by water related disease.
  • 1 out of 8 people in the world do not have access to clean drinking water.
  • Unsafe water kills more people every year than all other forms of violence put together, including war.
  • Children are the most vulnerable.
  • 90% of the almost 30,000 deaths that will occur each week are children under 5 years old.
  • One child dying every 20 seconds.

Wow. If I told you that $40 (or a donation of any amount) could change the score, would you consider it? For $40, a Filter of Hope water filter will purify up to 150 gallons of water a day, 7 days a week, for up to 10 years! The filters are easy to set up and clean — it is a very quick and easy solution to the water crisis.

Filter of Hope is a new organization that wants to help bring water filters to 3rd world countries that don’t have access to clean water. Unlike other water organizations, Filter of Hope isn’t trying to build wells or extensive clean water systems — but rather, something much simpler and cheaper –  a $40 water filter in the hands of each family. Many people have access to water, it just isn’t clean water. That is why there is are so many water-related deaths — people realize they need the water, but they are drinking contaminated water.

After being disappointed in the different types of filtration methods available, a breakthrough occurred in 2011 when they discovered a unique filtration technology using hollow fiber filter membranes. This technology has been used in kidney dialysis and wastewater treatment for years and can also be used to make an inexpensive gravity fed point-of-use water filter that will remove the harmful bacteria and protozoa from water. Now there are thousands of Filter of Hope water filters in use around the world, saving lives, creating healthy families and giving them a hope for the future.

How people can help:
People can help in a variety of ways — online donations ($40 can buy a water filter, but any amount will help), make a donation in someones name (send a donation card), or volunteering. People can travel by his/herself or together with their church or another organization to go on a Global Effect Mission trip and install the filters themselves.

This is an opportunity to find something for that person on your list, grab a last minute gift and completely change the score and life of someone who desperately needs it. Won’t you consider this today?

Filter of Hope partners with organizations like Samaritans Purse and Convoy of Hope — you can see the complete list here: http://filterofhope.org/about-us/partners/
